Restore the Wittlinger” Effort Underway!
If you've ever enjoyed a walk back along the race trail behind the Boiling Springs Pool, you know what a gem we have in our township in the form of the Wittlinger Nature Preserve! At the trailhead, a plaque states the Wittlinger's goals: "This 50 acres is for the purpose of wildlife habitat, open space, passive recreation, and environmental education or study for current and future generations." It is peaceful, green acreage in our little village of Boiling Springs.
However, perhaps you also have noticed that the natural habitat of the preserve is slowly and insidiously being replaced by non-native invasive plant species such as Japanese Knotweed, multi-flora rose, Tree of Heaven, and others. Also, the trail is uneven due to roots and erosion and crowded by thorny vines. We are forming a group of local residents dedicated to making improvements to the Wittlinger Nature Preserve. These restoration efforts will include removing invasive plant species and replacing them with native plants as well as making trail improvements. This is a long-term project that will require the support and involvement of the community.
If you would like to be part of the steering committee for the “Restore the Wittlinger” project, please email us at restorethewittlinger@gmail.com or contact Cindy Hooks (717-713-8463) or Jane Gillwood (717-701-8425). Further information about other ways you can help will be forthcoming as well.
